Talk about a Shocker –
By Sue TL Fox – August 5, 2006

(AUG 5) Yesterday afternoon emails began coming in about one of our photographers, Dale Hausner who had done some past fight coverage in the Arizona area for WBAN.  Hausner was arrested for murder,  being one of two suspects in the serial killings in Arizona, that began in May of 2005 (according to news sources).

I first got the breaking news from Amy Green of A Ring of Their Own,  asking if I had heard about Hausner being one of the suspects in the serial killings in Arizona.  After nearly falling off my chair about this news, it could have only been moments that I was getting requests by email from the news media to contact them in regards to Hausner working with WBAN as a photographer.

I honestly still could not believe it, even when speaking to several news media agencies, and each and every one confirming it was indeed—Dale Hausner.

Apparently, he became a person of interest, along with his friend, Samuel John Dieteman when a map with red and blue dots representing the locations of the attacks, were found in an apartment complex where the two lived.  In the bag it also contained an expended .410-gauge shotgun shell, and a piece of paper referring to serial violence, according to the news posted on other news media coverage.

In a search of their apartment, detectives found a .410-gauge shotgun and ammunition in the suspects’ possession. Police also found other guns and long rifles and news clippings about the killings.  According to a report, Hausner and Dieteman would take turns driving and shooting, and Dieteman admitted to carrying out many of the shootings.

[Due to the fact that Dale Hausner called me by phone three weeks before his arrest, and I was a police officer at the time—he wanted to ask me a “law Enforcement” question—and then asking me if I was hearing about the Snipper in his area in that phone call–I had to report this phone call to my police department.  I received a subpoena to go to court–Hausner’s defense attorney and the prosecutor interviewed me by phone to see if it was necessary to have me testify in court—it was not necessary—and I did not go and testify.]

JULY 11, 2013 – DALE HAUSNER COMMITS SUICIDE – AP EXCERPT

The death of a convicted Arizona serial killer whose body was discovered last month in an isolation cell was ruled a suicide Thursday by a medical examiner who said the gunman who once terrorized Phoenix had overdosed on antidepressants. Dale Hausner, 40, was found guilty in a series of random shootings on pedestrians, bicyclists and animals. The former airport janitor was given six death sentences and hundreds of years in prison for killing six people and attacking 19 others in 2005 and 2006.  Hausner was found unresponsive June 19 in his cell at the Eyman state prison complex in Florence. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at a hospital in Anthem, according to Arizona Department of Corrections officials.Forensic pathologist Dr. Gregory Hess, of the Pinal County Medical Examiner’s Office, said the cause of death was “amitriptyline intoxication.” Amitriptyline is one of a variety of antidepressant medications.”
