Stacey Prestage – First Female from Kansas City to Win a World Championship – Fought from 1990 to 2000

  • First female from Kansas City to win a world championship.  She fought from 1990-2000.
  • At the age of 20, Joe Gallegos became her boxing trainer.
  • Stacy Prestage’s 1st professional fight was in May 1990 against Baby Bear Duran. Stacy won the four round fight.  Her opponent who was 40 pounds heavier.
  • She fought on the undercard of heavyweight Orlin Norris in FL on 11/17/1990. She lost to Suzanne Riccio.
  • From there, she went on to be trained by Joe Frazier, Leon Spinks, Larry Holmes, and Freddy Roach.
  • On 11-23-1993, she won the WIBF’s FIRST World Championship belt. It was a bloody 10 rd fight against Dierdre Gogarty.  Barbara Buttrick & Jimmy Finn created and formally licensed the 1st Women’s Boxing Sanctioning body, the WIBF.   Womens’ International Boxing Federation.  Barbara presented the belt.   • She fought Christy Martin in her hometown, Daytona.  She went the distance, eight rounds.  She was the only one at the time to go the distance with Christy. Actually, Christy left the boxing ring thinking she’d lost.  All the media come to Stacy’s corner.  They had to get Christy out of the locker room to give her the win.
  • She fought at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City on 06/22/1996  She was the undercard of Roberto Duran & the late Hector Macho Comacho. It was promoted by Bob Arum.  Sugar Ray Leonard was ringside commentator that evening.
  • She was in a women’s boxing documentary on BBC.

Personal:

  • Star fast pitch softball player.  She could have gotten a full ride to UCLA but chose to live somewhere else.  Stacy has a fascinating story in regards to this.
  • She worked as medical assistant for 19 years.   She joined the US Army in 1987.
